We will be visiting Switzerland soon. We are a family of 5, 3 children under 15. I will be purchasing 3 x junior travel card @ CHF 30 each for my 3 children from Geneva train station. I was purchasing mine and my husband’s ticket on sbb.ch and the cheapest fare available for us was Supersaver Ticket, Half-Fare Travelcard. It gave me an option to upgrade to 1st class by adding 48CHF for the trip. There is an info box however next to kids junior travel card that says “It is not possible to upgrade class, change routes or change trains using a supersaver ticket.” and “Reduced prices for Half-Fare Travelcard holders, children between 6 and 15, dogs (always 2nd class).”

This has caused me a bit of confusion.

a) If it’s not possible to upgrade class on a supersaver ticket, why does it give me an option to upgrade at extra cost? Is it possible to travel in first class with a supersaver half fare travel card?

b) If I upgraded my supersaver ticket to first class option, can my kids travel with me in first class on their junior travel card?

Provided you will buy the Swiss Half Fare Card for you and your husband, there is no need to buy the Junior Card. The Swiss Half Fare Card comes with the complimentary Swiss Family Card that equals the advantages of the Junior Card.

The Junior Card, as well as the Swiss Family Card, both entitle your kids to travel free of charge in the same class for which you or your husband do hold a ticket.

It is not possible to upgrade Supersaver tickets, they are only valid in the class as issued. The information in the info box is therefore correct. The app did not offer you an upgrade, it is to be understood as “either - or”; it is a list of possible ticket options from which you can choose, and not a combination. Some people wish to buy a Supersaver upgrade only for their existing travel card, for example. Had you wished to travel in 1st class on a Supersaver ticket, you would have been required to buy a Supersaver 1st class ticket.

RolandP Thank you so much for your informative and helpful reply. Just wanted to mention, my tickets are supersaver tickets and not half-fare travel card. Do I get the same facility of having a complimentary Swiss Family Card with the supersaver ticket too? If yes, do I buy this at any staffed station? Appreciate your help.

No, you will receive the Family Card only if you buy an offer from Swiss Travel System.

In your subject and your original question, you mentioned that you will travel with Supersaver Ticket, Half-Fare Travelcard. Therefore, and since you are a tourist, I was assuming you will hold the Swiss Half Fare Card in addition. Will you have the resident half fare card (yearly subscription) instead? In either case, you must be in the possession of either the Swiss Half Fare Card or the Half Fare Card; otherwise, your tickets are not valid for travel.

As @FatimaH confirmed, when having the Swiss Half Fare Card, the Swiss Family Card is complimentary. When having the Half Fare Card, you indeed need the Junior Cards; the latter is free of charge for the 3rd and any further children.

What is termed as an offer on the Swiss Travel System? I just bought 2 x supersaver tickets from the website. Is that considered an offer?
Do you have to be a resident to have the Swiss Family Card?

Yes I did mention supersaver ticket / half fare travel card in my original post as that’s how the ticket option appeared to me on the website. Now that I have bought the ticket, the confirmation email mentions Supersaver ticket.

Do I need to have a special card for this supersaver ticket to be valid like the half fare travel card?

Does this supersaver ticket entitles me to have the Swiss Family Card?

Just to clarify we are visiting, we are not residents.

The Swiss Travel System offers are exclusively for non-residents. However, and I start to repeat myself, you must be in the possession of the Swiss Half Fare Card to use Supersaver tickets at a reduced (half) fare. If you do so without, you will have to pay a hefty surcharge on the train.

Hi Alice, I don’t think you can buy a swiss half fare card if you are a non resident, at least that’s what I understood. But I could be wrong.

In answer to your question, you can buy a super saver ticket with or without the half fare card. Its the half fare ticket option that you cannot buy without the half far travel card. I hope I made sense and didn’t confuse you more.
