Hello,

I’m coming on holiday with my dog to Geneva and would like to use the buses and boats.

My hotel will issue me with a Geneva Transport Card so I can use the transportation for free, however, I know I will need to pay for my dog.

I have seen I can purchase a Dog Day Pass, but is this valid with the Transport Card or do I need to have a Swiss Pass in order to purchase/use the Dog Pass?

Thank you for your request.

Yes you need a Swiss Pass.

The Dog Pass is integrated onto the SwissPass of the accompanying person. The pass can therefore not be transferred to more than one person.
If other people also travel frequently alone with the same dog, each person requires their own Dog Pass.
If other people occasionally travel with the dog, they can buy a 2nd class Point-to-Point Ticket at half price or a Day Pass for Dogs for the dog (plus a ticket for themselves).
The Dog Pass is not linked to a particular travel class and so is valid in the travel class of the accompanying person’s ticket.
The Dog Pass is valid on routes in the GA area of validity

Generally said, you can transport small dogs with a wither height of up to 30 cm for free as hand luggage provided they are in a transport box, basket or other animal-friendly container and placed under your seat. However, once the dog is no longer in its container, you will require a separate ticket for the dog.

Dogs that need a ticket, need either a ½ fare point-to-point ticket, or an Unireso Day Pass zone 10 at reduced fare (valid in Geneva), or an Unireso 9 Day Pass Zone 10 valid from 9 AM at reduced fare (valid in Geneva), or Day Pass Dog (valid in the entire country), whatever is the cheapest for the planned journey(s). It also applies for travelling on the Mouettes.

A 1-year Dog Pass is, in my opinion, a viable option provided you are staying for multiple days in Switzerland. It does require / comes on the SwissPass card, while the products mentioned above don’t.

If that all sounds too confusing to you, you may wish to see the SBB Travel Center at Geneva main station (locals call it Cornavin station). There, they can help you to choose the best ticket.
