Hi All,

I will be holding a Swiss Travel Pass and German Rail Pass and is planning to make the following inter-city trips next month. I would like to seek your advise if (a) my rail passes are sufficient or additional tickets are required, (b) if there are any thing to look out for when crossing borders.

First trip:

Winterthur to Munich Hbf (via EC197)

Second trip:

Munich hbf to Zurich Station (via EC96 or EC98)

In a nutshell, no, the combination of the two passes is not sufficient for your journey.

The German Rail Pass is valid from/to Lindau (D). The Swiss Travel Pass is valid from/to St. Margrethen (CH). As a result, you will need an additional point-to-point ticket from St. Margrethen to Lindau.

A seat reservation for the entire journey is advisable as, from my personal work experience, these trains are always well booked. You can get it, as well as the additional ticket, from the SBB Travel Center in Winterthur, for example.

Thanks RolandP for the detailed explanation! Suppose I get all the rail pass, tickets and reservations ahead of time, do I need to get off the train at any point to activate the tickets? Or can I make it across the entire trip on the same train? Thanks again!!
