Hi,

I have bought a 4-day Swiss Travel Pass, and I would like to take train for free with “PE” mark which to my knowledge is Golden Pass Express. However, I found it not possible to make only seat reservation for train with “PE” mark, got error message like “we cannot offer you a reservation for this connection”. I heard that Golden Pass Express is very popular and it is necessary to make seat reservation in advance.

How can I make seat reservation for “PE” trains for free as I have already had a Swiss Travel Pass?

The Golden Pass is operated by a private railways company called MOB. You must therefore make the seat reservations with them directly: Ticket purchase and seat reservation (mob.ch)

RolandP Okay… and does it mean that I cannot take Golden Pass for free even with Swiss Travel Pass as it is operated by a private railways company?

The Swiss Travel Pass is valid for various journeys (see area of validity), but if a seat reservation is mandatory, this must be purchased separately. It can be purchased directly from the respective private train company or at SBB ticket offices at the stations.

Switzerland has, probably as the only country in this world, an integrated tariff and ticketing system. Tickets are valid on all means of transport, no matter the operator. Exceptions do apply for mountain railways and cable cars. The STP is fully covering the Golden Pass.

If you want to ride the Golden Pass Panoramic, I suggest a seat reservation. It is well worth the money. It is very popular, and until 20 October 2023 more travellers are expected due to multiple ticket promotions (e.g. ztraveller wit the Coop Day Pass).

There are hundreds of private railways in Switzerland. The vast majority of them accept the Swiss Travel Pass, don’t worry about that. The main exceptions are mountain peaks like Jungfraujoch or Gornergrat but you get a 25-50% discount.

Back to your question: seat reservations are optional on the Golden Pass Express. I’ve taken that train twice without reservations and both times it was relatively empty. I wouldn’t bother especially at that price (20 CHF) but if you’d like to book someone posted the link 🙂
