Fully Flexible ticket: Can I modify the reservation on the same day?

Hello, I am flying from the United States into Zurich. I will then take a train from Zurich to Como (Italy). The most expensive tariff is “Fully Flexible Fare”. My plan is to buy a ticket for the train departing Zurich at 9:33. However, if my flight gets delayed, will I be able to move my reservation to, let’s say, the next train departing at 10:33 without much of an headache, perhaps just from the app itself? Is there a better/more flexible tariff that I can purchase? Any advice would be much appreciated.

If the final destination of your trip is Como, I wondered why you actually fly into Zurich while Milan Malpensa (MXP) would be much more convenient, and from my experience as a former aviation professional, flights into Milan are usually also less expensive. Did you check that option?

What concerns your train ticket to Como: I suggest looking up www.sbb.ch/en. As you can see, the line is served by direct Eurocity trains, or with a change in either Lugano or Chiasso (IC/EC/RE services).

If you buy a fully flexible ticket Zürich HB to Como S.G. with a change of trains in Lugano, you can take any train to Lugano or Chiasso. For the onward, you have to change to a RE service as the Eurocity trains need a seat reservation for Italy (Chiasso to Como S.G, even though it’s a 10 mins ride). IC and RE trains do not require a seat reservation, neither do EC trains in Switzerland.
If you buy an Eurocity through ticket, you would still need to change your ticket, as they are only valid for a specific connection (EC train) and cannot be used on a later Eurocity serving that route. Although the tickets are flexible, they come with a seat reservation which needs to be changed…
