Hello Rochelle
For the Geneva Airport to Zermatt leg, my recommendation would be to purchase Saver Day Passes in advance. Get them now as the price is raising the nearer the travel date. The Saver Day Passes are valid on any connection on the day of validity and are a great bargain, compared to regular point-to-point tickets. Beware, don’t buy Supersaver tickets which are also on offer, at least not for the travel to Zermatt; they are valid on a specific connection only. As you cannot predict the arrival time, in the event of a late arrival, the Supersaver ticket is lost as the train has left.
The Saver Day Pass or the point-to-point ticket are good to travel on the day, with any connection. The Saver Day Passes are not available at the SBB Travel Center, they must be purchased in advance and cannot be refunded. When purchasing them online, be careful when entering passenger names and dates of birth. There are no amendments possible.
If you do not have a ski pass in Zermatt, I strongly suggest to purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card in addition. It grants discounts for the train tickets and further excursions in Zermatt. If you gonna spend CHF 240 on train and cable car tickets per person, you are break-even as the Swiss Half Fare Card costs CHF 120 per person. You can purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card online in advance, or at the SBB Travel Center in Geneva Airport, the cost is the same no matter the sales channel.
I did a dummy booking for 13 January 2024:
- A train point-to-point ticket from Geneva-Airport to Zermatt costs CHF 106 one way, full fare. The Saver Day Pass would cost right now CHF 70.
- Having the Swiss Half Fare Card, the point-to-point ticket from Geneva-Airport to Zermatt is at CHF 53 one way, while the Saver Day Pass is at CHF 44.
For the way back from Zermatt to Geneva Airport, you are welcome to purchase Supersaver tickets as the time is not that crucial and you are certainly able to meet the given departure time in Zermatt.
For children, there are special offers, let me know if you have got children in your travel group.
Does that make sense? I know, train travel in Switzerland sounds confusing, while it isn’t. Millions of tourists are using Swiss public transport every year.
I suggest you downloading the SBB Mobile app. It knows all Swiss public transport schedules.
Let us know if we can assist you any further, the SBB Community is made for that purpose.
Kind regards,
Roland
