Supersaver Class Upgrade

When purchasing supersaver class upgrades, do you still need to purchase a normal ticket? I did not realize how it worked and bought two supersaver class upgrades and have QR codes with what looks like tickets, but will these not work when unaccompanied by normal tickets?

Class upgrades are for people who already have a 2nd class ticket, or pass. It is mostly targeted at those with a 2nd Class pass that occasionally want to travel in 1st class.

So yes, you still need a 2nd class ticket. What you should have bought is a 1st class supersaver ticket, not just an upgrade.
