7 minute connection in Thalwil

I will be traveling to Luzerne from St. Moritz. We have not used the train service previously. In Thalwil we are scheduled to arrive at 15:38 on track 5. The departure is on track 4 at 15:45. If the train is on time is 7 minutes enough time to get to track 4? I am carrying one bag. I would be able to walk quickly but probably I would not be able to run carrying the bag.

If I have a prepaid ticket and the train is late to the station and I am unable to make the connection, do I have to buy a new ticket?

This is more than enough and an official connection. It will even be announced in the train arriving from Lucerne. SBB would not offer this connection if it wasn’t feasible.

If you board the train in sector A in Lucerne, you will be next to the elevator in Thalwil, to change platforms.

I am coming from St. Moritz and heading to Lucerne - not coming from Lucerne. I don’t know if that changes your answer. Let me know if you think it makes a difference. In any case, you apparently made a suggestion for the boarding location that I would use. Do you have a boarding location recommendation for the train I would actually be on coming from Chur into Thalwil? Thanks again for your effort to help

Sorry, I messed up your itinerary when I replied late night.

My saying is also valid for the other direction. When you get on the train near the escalators in Chur, you will be more or less near to the elevator in Thalwil.

You could actually even travel on a fast and direct train to Zurich HB and change there. It’s a little detour as you will do the stretch Thalwil-Zürich HB-Thalwil twice, yet sometimes this connection is even faster than with a change in Thalwil.

Thanks for your reply and clarification. I have only one other question for now. If I purchase a saver ticket which does not allow for changes, what happens if my train to this connection is late? Do I have to purchase a new ticket? Thanks again for your kind help.

In case of a misconnection which is the result of a railway fault (e.g. previous train delayed), you are welcome to use the next train. If you were wandering around and therefore missed the train, then you would have to purchase a new ticket.

If the train is late by more than 5 minutes, I recommend staying on board the train and continuing to Zurich HB. Change there to a train bound for Lucerne. In Thalwil, the train to Lucerne stops once per hour, while there are actually two trains from Zurich per hour, one which is non-stop to Zug, thus no stop at Thalwil. You might be able to catch this one then.

Thanks for this creative and thoughtful suggestion. You bring up something that i did not think of. In whatever car I happen to be in during the journey to Thalwil is it likely that there will be a train staff aboard in each car? I really appreciate the help you have given.

The train is a multiple unit train, so you can walk through the entire train, so will the train conductor.

However, you should not worry, trains are usually very punctual in Switzerland.
