hello. I would like to take a direct train from Spiez, Switzerland to Milan, Italy on April 13. I checked the schedule for that date and it says it is not available. Is there any construction or maintenance going on at that time? Or is it already sold out? Or is it because it hasn’t gone on sale yet and I can’t book it? It’s an important date and I’d like to know.

Guten Tag. Ich würde gerne am 13. April einen Direktzug von Spiez (Schweiz) nach Mailand (Italien) nehmen. Ich habe den Fahrplan für dieses Datum geprüft und er sagt, dass er nicht verfügbar ist. Gibt es zu dieser Zeit irgendwelche Bau- oder Wartungsarbeiten? Oder ist er bereits ausverkauft? Oder liegt es daran, dass er noch nicht im Verkauf ist und ich nicht buchen kann? Es ist ein wichtiges Datum und ich würde es gerne wissen.

According to my check, it is possible to book online for this day on sbb.ch. For example, I could recommend the 8:36 connection from Spiez, as there are seats available in both 1st and 2nd class.

The 8:36 departure you mentioned is a connecting train. I want to take the direct trains (12:05, 14:05), but they are not available for booking. (They are on the timetable, but when I press the book button, I get the message ‘Unfortunately, there are no more tickets available for the connection you have selected’).
I’d like to know if a direct train will open up if I wait, or if it’s not available at all or sold out.

Der von Ihnen erwähnte Abfahrtszug um 8.36 Uhr ist ein Anschlusszug. Ich möchte die direkten Züge (12.05 Uhr, 14.05 Uhr) nehmen, aber sie sind nicht buchbar (sie stehen im Fahrplan, aber wenn ich auf die Schaltfläche “Buchen” drücke, erhalte ich die Meldung “Für die von Ihnen gewählte Verbindung sind leider keine Fahrkarten mehr verfügbar”).

The information shown in the SBB timetable cannot be coordinated with the available offers. Only a query in the ticket shop shows whether Eurocity still has free seats. You can still find tickets from Spiez to Milano via Brig - Domodossla, on saturday April13th.

Trains don’t sell out months in advance. So if you cannot buy tickets for a train a month from now it means that the train is not open for reservation yet. That trains open only late for reservation is very common on that route. That the SBB planner cannot properly deal with that is an ongoing problem that maybe in a decade or so they will have solved…

So all you can do is wait. I was in a similar situation last summer. And then, a week before travel the trains opened for booking, with a slightly different schedule.
