Hi! I’m trying to book a train ticket from Zermatt to Milan in June 29, i see the timetable on SBB app but when it directs me to the SBB website and tried to book it, it says sorry cant be book its either the ticket are sold out or it has changed due to work stuff. Can you pls help me, how to book it?

Tipueyou45 Hi. Due to engineering works between Domodossola and Milan, all international trains will be canceled on this line.

I don’t find any information about regional trains or replacement busses. I think that the timetables are not available now, you should try later.

Planned construction work with a significant impact on the timetable Trenitalia:

From 9 June to 8 September 2024, the route between Arona and Stresa will be completely closed to rail traffic. This means that all EC trains between Domodossola and Milan will be cancelled. There will be a replacement bus service, but with longer journey times and reduced capacity.

Please Check timetabale again in June 2024,
Probably you will find better solutions for travelling and more offers for ticketing Zermatt - Domodossola, Domodossla - Milano.

Tipueyou45 I got the same message for Interlaken Ost to Como, which has one leg in Italy. I noticed if I booked up to last stop in Switzerland, it let’s me book. So might be a schedule availability in Italy issue.

An alternative route is Zermatt - Brig - Domodossola - Centovalli - Locarno - Milan. Reservations and advance booking are not mandatory on this route, but possible between Domodossola and Locarno.

Danhiel that’s what i though. Someone told me abiut the rail works around that time but i was trying to book yesterday till we had to call the SBB customer service for clarification and the agent doesn’t seem like she knows about the trail works around that time. She just told us to wait cuz the timetable for Italy’s side is not out yet. But then again, you guys says otherwise and all the Domodossola to Milan transfers are all cancelled.

Checking it now for June 29, the trips are now 7hrs - 12hrs that usually were 3hrs - 4hrs thru the Domodossola - Milan route.

Is there any way or route to get to Milan from Zermatt? We are willing to book our transfer to different legs just to make it to Milan that day.

Limeuhu12 is there any other way or route to get to Milan? Unfortunately i need to book it before the 3rd week of March for my visa appointment. That’s the only thing that i need in my application.. we are willing to do the longer route just to get there..

Tried booking from Locarno - Milan and Lugano - Milan on Trentinilia app and it say its sold out or its way too far out. I am not sure, but then the customer service told us to just wait cuz the timetable are bot out yet.

I will truy to understand. I was looking for Eurocity tickets in webshop Trenitalia. For 29th of june i found only tickets for EC leaving at 17:10 from Milano to Lugano. Probably Trenitalia didn’t implented yet full offer for online sale.

We checked trenitalia for the 28th of June and there’s actually some spots that are open, others are sold out, and on the other hand June 29th was all sold out

No, any train is sold out for 29th of june , but for some trains we can not yet find tickets in ticketshop of Trenialia. Do you really need a ticket for 29th of June for you Visa?

May be, if you look for offer a few days earlier you find more conneting Eurocity trains. You can also ask customer service of Trenitalia if a international ticket from Milano to a destination in Switzerland is availibl witout reservation of a Eurocity train .

Limeuhu12 i do need it before March 25 unfortunately. I can wait for a couple of weeks and check if they’ll release schedules for the transfer, but if they wont and if theyre all sold out, im doomed.

You’re saying all trains on june 29 are sold out?

I have another idea. If you need only a valid ticket from Lugano to Milan, you can buy a bus ticket. I see free seats on Flixbus who are not expensive, about 10 CHF. Tickets are also available from Lucerne or Zurich to Milan for about 20 CHF.

Danhiel ohh, that’s right. I didn’t think about that. I can buy bus tickets from Lugano to Milan. I’ll just have to wait until june for more schedule around that time. Good idea! Thank you!

Oh dear, you have time to check every day if in tickstshop Trainitalia tickets are available on Milano to Lugano Eurocity Trains I am confident that you can book a ticket for 29th of june soon.

lolitajimmy92 yes it’s actually doable if your book different legs of the trip. But from lugano or any last stop in Switzerland to Milan it wont let you. Tried booking it on trenitalia, it wont let me. When is ur trip?

Trains do not sell out months in advance. If they did, they would be useless. If you cannot book a train that is several months in the future you can assume that it is not yet bookable.

I would not bother trying to get something booked for the purpose of your visa. The people that are handling visa approvals know that in Europe you do not book surface transportation months in advance. Your hotel bookings will be enough to illustrate your intended route.
Trains are mass transit. I would be very upset if I would have to book all my subway tickets in advance in order to qualify for a visa…

Krist i understand, but we also want to book our transfers ahead of time and not just because of my visa… although yes my visa is the very reason why but again we just want to be stress-free before the trip even if its months away

We just booked our train transfers within Italy today, no problems booking it since timetables are already out. Really, just wondering and also getting me nervous/worried why Lugano - Milan timetable is not out yet (btw, just checked again today.. they already have schedules around that time July 1, 2 but still saying June 29 all sold out) i know, i dunno, but i will wait and check again next weekend if it will change again.

I don’t know how train schedules work in Europe that’s why im here asking for infos and help. Im sorry guys and thank you for the infos and helping me understand all this. 🙂

Tipueyou45 In the past, there were two timetable periods in Europe (winter/spring and summer/fall) and all countries changed on the same day. Now, with dynamic online timetables and the proliferation of operators (state-owned or private), this becomes unpredictable. Some operators wait to know the final schedule, modified due to construction work for example, others publish a timetable and sell tickets months in advance, but then cancel trains and inform travelers by mail that they must find a new schedule.
