Two-year old Swiss-Italian travel ticket

Hi!

I am a little bit confused. I would like to travel from Switzerland to Italy with my two-year-old kid on a direct train. Both Swiss and Italian companies are supposed to grant free travel for kids under 3 years (provided that they do not take a seat). However, when checking for tickets via sbb.ch, it offers one for the kid too for 51 CHF.

What is the policy?

If your child will not occupy a seat, you do not need to mention it when you buy the ticket. If you do mention it, a ticket including reservation will be issued automatically.
