Tickets from Milan to Lugano. I’ll like to know if its possible to buy the tickets at the last minute as I’ve got a connection time of only 13 minutes from Rome, just in case if unable to connect… On the app is there a barcode for every ticket n is it necessary to validate? How is validation done online? Thank you.

Thoinguezau30 The tickets for RE80 are flexible if you buy them on sbb.ch or SBB Mobile app (Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera, validity: 4 hours). Such tickets are not available on trenitalia.com and are cheaper as tickets for the Eurocity (EC).

If you want to buy a ticket for EC with seat reservation, it is better to buy them on trenitalia.com or Trenitalia app. You can modify the train online before departure if you have a standard ticket. Changes of SBB international tickets are only possible with a call to the contact center.

13 minutes is below the minimum conneciton time at Milano Centrale, so your connection would indeed not be protected.
The barcodes in the ticket app are for the train staff to check your ticket. They will scan those. For long distance trains with reservations there is no need to validate or anything.
The train you are connecting to, is it the RE80 train? Or is it an EC trains? Tickets for the RE80 are flexible, as that is just a regional commuter train, so if you miss that one you can just take the next one.

Yes its the RE80. Great, I guess that means I can also buy now in advance selecting the tickets for the 17:43 and if we can’t connect we can still take the 18:43 since its valid 4hrs. Is this correct? Much thanx.

I appolgise, but at Milano Cebtral station you will find ATM Trenitalia for buying your ticket Milano to Chiasso, may becalosi to Lugano.
Or you check SBB timetable shortly before arriving at Milano Central Station and you buy a arcobalena transfrontarlier Ticket Milano - Lugano at Ticketshop SBB.CH, for CHF 16.40.

1x Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera Individual Ticket , Adults

CHF16.40
Valid: Only for the selected connection 
Fri, 29.03.2024 Departure 17:43, Arrival 21:43

“Selected connection” means “Milano - Lugano” and not a specific train, but only regional trains in Italy, this is also indicated on the ticket. You will receive a mail with a QR code to show if a control occurs or you can download the ticket as PDF and print it. If you buy the ticket in SBB mobile app, the QR code is visible in the app.
