Reserved trains from Speiz to Milan

Hello. We will be traveling from Grindelwald to Milan on an early morning train. We will have the SwissPass so I know it covers our travel until Domodossola. However, from past experience, I recall that the train from Speiz to Milan is usual for reserved seats. Can you please advise how we get a reservation without buying the ticket from Speiz to Domodossola?

Sirroujo87 Hello.

With the Swiss Travel Pass, you can select the direct train from Spiez to Milan and choose “GA Travelcard 1st or 2nd class” as discount for every passenger, you will obtain a reserved seat from Spiez to Milan and pay only for Italy.

Please note that the line between Domodossola and Milan will be closed from 9 June to 8 September 2024. In this period, you must book a ticket in replacement buses.

This is so helpful. I didn’t know the line would be closed. Ugh! What site do you recommend using to book the bus and do they restrict the amount of luggage?

Sirroujo87 With your Swiss Travel Pass, you could take another route, for example Interlaken - Zurich - Milan or Interlaken - Lucerne - Lugano or Arth-Goldau - Milan. It would take more time but it would be more comfortable with the train. It is not expensive, you pay only from the border station Chiasso to Milan.

I don’t know if they restrict the amount of luggage in the bus. The bus tickets are now available on sbb.ch or trenitalia.com from Domodossola to Milan.

I have actually gone that way before while
I was staying in Locarno and it was very easy. I’ll have to decide if I want to make that trip from
Grindelwald. I really appreciate the information about the route being closed. This has me rethinking the entire trip Italy.
Where can I find a list of routes that will be closed in July?

Sirroujo87 From Locarno, you could easily make a day trip to Milan. You have a direct train every hour.

In Switzerland, the Gotthard tunnel is partially closed and some trains are rerouted via the old panoramic line, but the online timetable is adapted. On weekends, engineering works are often planned with delays, the online timetable is also adapted.
