Hello everyone, greetings from Turkey. We are traveling to Switzerland with my wife and 2 children (1 and 5 years old) on 25-26 April. We also want to see the magnificent nature of Switzerland during our holiday. I will come with the car I rented from Strasbourg and the car will be with us during this time. But we especially want to devote one day to nature travel by train. Without overnight accommodation, we plan to travel to a location by car and then travel to the lake and nature by train. I have 2 questions for this: Which travel card should I buy? Will a “Saver day pass” be sufficient for this? Can I use it without buying a Swiss pass? Choosing tickets online seemed very complicated. Which ticket type would you recommend? My second question is which routes do you recommend? (note: kids are compatible and enjoyable for traveling)

Thank you for your request, greetings from Switzerland.

The decisive factor is the trips you are going to make. For two days, I recommend the Saver Day Pass, this card is valid almost throughout Switzerland (see Synoptic Map), a SwissPass Card is not necessary. Children do not need a ticket, they travel for free.

I don’t know which region you’ll be travelling to. As an alternative, you have the Swiss Travel Pass 3 days which gives you many advantages, for example free admission to more than 500 museums, many Mountain excursions included, unlimited travel by train, bus and boat.

To park your car, I recommend our P+Rail parking areas.

Apart from my colleague’s advice, I would like to share some personal thoughts.
I, personally, must say, to combine rental car and train is the most expensive mode of travel in Switzerland, or in other words, you are maximizing the travel cost. If the budget is not of any concern, then fine.
However, you pay for the car to be parked in an expensive car park, while you pay full fare tickets to reach the mountain tops. The area you want to visit is not accessible by car. The rental fee for the car would have been a good investment for the Swiss Half Fare Card. And, you could have travelled all by train. The IC61 trains serving from Basel SBB to Interlaken Ost even offer a family coach with a playground for the kids. Also, Strasbourg is too far to explore the Swiss Alps from there. You should have chosen a place that is located nearer to the Alps. If you can, I strongly advise rethinking your travel plans.

Dear Roland; Since you wrote for Nicolas, I think we should take Nicolas with us in our bag next time, along with water and a sandwich 🙂 Dear Roland; My perfect trip in Switzerland is over, but I definitely agree with your suggestions for the next trips and for those who follow here. There is absolutely no need to rent a car for Switzerland in general, the car can sometimes even be a burden. SBB mobile application is great, we thank the authorities for this. Interlaken and its surroundings are full of wonderful villages, see you again soon.
