We will be taking regional train RE80 (Trenord 25521) from Locarno to Milano Centrale this summer. I will buy our tickets on SBB.ch with our Half Fare Card, and print out paper copies.
I saw a post on a travel forum by a Swiss person, stating that such ticket must be validated for travel within Italy with a “check in” on the Trenitalia app. They insisted this is true of all tickets for travel on Regionale trains in Italy, even if the tickets were bought from SBB.ch, and even if the journey began in Switzerland.
Can someone either confirm or deny that this is so? I understand this check-in is required for Trenitalia mobile tickets for travel on regional trains within Italy that were purchased with the Trenitalia app, but cannot see how we could be required to do that with tickets we bought from SBB and printed out.
