Good morning from Switzerland bobcabbie1
Normally, point-to-point tickets must be used on the same route in both directions; this for the outward as well as for the inward journey.
For the travel from Spiez to Eigergletscher, however, the point-to-point ticket works a bit differently; there, they leave you the option to travel via Grindelwald Terminal or Lauterbrunnen. Thus, you can travel in both directions via Grindelwald Terminal, or in both directions via Lauterbrunnen / Wengen, or via one way up and the other way down. So, in other terms, here, the point-to-point ticket can be used for a circuit. This is indicated on the ticket, ‘via Lauterbrunnen o Grindelwald Terminal’, where the ‘o’ stands for ‘or’.
The only restriction: you cannot travel to Grindelwald, the village, as you must change at Grindelwald Terminal, the station before. If you want to travel via Grindelwald, the village, ask the train conductor to issue a change of route ticket.
The Saver Day Pass is valid to Grindelwald or Wengen only, not beyond. You would require a ticket from Grindelwald or Wengen to Eigergletscher in addition. Cost-wise, a point-to-point is probably cheaper, given the flexible choice of route here.
Also, if you plan multiple trips in Switzerland, the Swiss Half Fare Card is very beneficial. If you gonna stay in the Bernese Oberland area solely, the Bernese Oberland Pass might be another valuable ticket. It all depends on what you plan while visiting our beautiful country.
