Train from Varenna-Esino to Tirano

As the subject states, in late September we will be travelling from Varenna-Esino to Tirano in order to catch the Bernina Express.

I notice that I can buy this ticket on the SBB app, which after lots of practice I am starting to become familiar with.

Is this is a good idea or should I stick to buying it on an Italian app such as Trenord? I notice SBB mentions needing to check in before travel. What does that mean?

Final question, I know that most Swiss tickets are for the route not the time, is it the same with this one. If we missed the 14:25 for example, could we simply get the next train or is it different with Italian trains?

In ticketshop Trenitalia.com you will find same tickets as in SBB.ch, but it is not necessry to buy in ticket month in advance.

Please not that your ticket is only valabe on your regional train/bus once you have completed check- In.

Thank you for your request. Of sure you can buy the ticket through the SBB.

From 28.10.2023, check-in will be mandatory on all regional services in Italy. Regional Transport Italy has decided that every person must check in for the desired regional train before traveling. This also applies to customers who have purchased their tickets in Switzerland. Check-in is only possible on the day of travel up to 5 minutes before the scheduled train departure.

→ The tickets of the Arcobaleno fare network are not affected by the check-in.

→ Check-in must be carried out by scanning the QR code on the ticket, by clicking on the link in the online ticket or via this website:

I will wait until closer to the trip and just book on my Trenord app, and remember to check in.
