I recently purchased tickets from Lugano to Lucern in September. The trip is a combination of train and boat. The site only offered 2nd class. The receipt does not specifically state both modes of transportation.
Questions:
1- does my purchase include both the rail and boat portions of the journey?
2- how can I upgrade to First Class?

I think you simply purchased a train ticket from Lugano to Luzern for 2nd class at 64 CHF.

There is no dedicated Gotthard Panorama Express ticket. You simply need a 1st class ticket from Lugano to Luzern Bahnhofquai via Flüelen (See).

You can use your existent ticket; the conductor on the train can still change the routing and class. Or you double check / amend your ticket with the agent in the SBB Travel Center at Lugano before departure.

For the train you definitely need a 1st class ticket; for the boat you can use a 2nd class ticket, while 1st class is recommended.

Alternatively, travel to Locarno or Bellinzona and board the IR 26 or IR 46 train to Flüelen. This is a regular train service taking the same route as the Gotthard Panorama Express at no extra cost, yet without no tour guide or commentary.

Yes you are correct - I purchased the rail ticket for 64 chf on the site of the Gotthard Panorama Express, which is not very user-friendly, but is very misleading.
