Sorry to bother you all with this, but I am going to Switzerland for the first time next week with my son. I didn't know it was unusual to reserve a seat on the train until after I did it, but we have reserved seats in first class seats 91 & 92. My question is this, since there are two levels on this train, how do I know if my seats are on the lower level or if I need to go up to the upper level? Nothing on my ticket indicates either level, and I don't want to hold up anyone on the train by going to the wrong seat. Please help! :)

Hello @"amag1975"#p94633 It is vacation season now, and it was a wise decision to reserve seats on the IC2 trains. Are you sure it is a double deck train? Can you tell me the train number, please? With double deck (duplex) trains, seats 0-99 are at entrance level, seats 100+ are at the upper deck, just as in a hotel where the 100 stands for 1st floor. There are signs on the platforms as well. You can still change seats to the upper floor if there are enough seats left and in case your son never rode on a double deck train before. Kind regards, Roland

I think there are currently no double deck trains on that route, and on a Giruno seat numbers do not go that high (as the cars are shorter). So seat 91-92 are just two singles opposite each other in a conventional EW IV car.

Thank you so much for the information!! When I made the reservation on the SBB website, it showed IC2, but then it only shows IC on my ticket. Maybe that was an error about it being IC2? It says IC 873. Seating carriage central gangway. Coach 3. Does that mean I will stand in front of where the third carriage is to get on board?

I figured these trains during the summer may be busy, so that's why I reserved seats. What if by the time I get on, someone else is in our seats? I have read on blogs that some people don't get up even if you have an assigned seat? my ticket shows IC 873.

This is very strange, when I go into the SBB website and look at my date for travel, it still shows IC2 train 877. But on my ticket it says IC 873?? I know I booked that same route and it did say IC2.

Also, I see online under my reservation it says Zurich to Lugano via Gotthard.

Hello @"amag1975"#p94668 No worries. IC2 is the line number; 873 or 877 is the (internal) train / course number, both trains are servicing the IC2 line. Does your train ticket read 'Point-to-point' ticket or 'Supersaver'? Kind regards, Roland

Maybe you are confused with Germany, where IC2 is a train type, and that is indeed a double deck train. In Switzerland this is just IC line 2 (Zurich - Geneva via Bern is IC1 for example).

Hi Roland! My ticket is point to point, my son's says day pass since he is only 13. I should still look for my seats on the first level, right? on double decker, the seats on second level are 100+? Ok, so I will look for the platform that serves IC 873.

Its the “Gotthard Base Tunnel”, versus the “Gotthard Panorama Strecke”. If you want scenery go for the longer trip, that goes over the mountain route. If you have a normal ticket you do not need to change anything if you want to take a different train, as the ticket is good for all trains on the route.
It is in that case only your reservation that is bound to a train, and that cannot be changed.

There is no “advanced point to point” ticket. There “point to point” ticket, and there is “supsersaver ticket”. Look at your ticket, and see what the validity is. It should be obvious if it is only for one train, or if it is valid the whole day.

Sorry, I meant I bought the point-to-point ticket in advance/ahead of time. it’s not a super saver ticket, but I did buy a super saver ticket for the return route for a few days after that
