Domodossola --> Brig and purchasing Intl ticket

Hello, we’re planning to travel north from Stresa to Switzerland the first week of Sep (a few days prior to Sep 8), and want to clarify and confirm that Domodossola to Brig will be operating. EC and/or R trains north. So much written and posted on this route this summer…I understand that there are route closures between Milan-Dom, due to the Arona-Stresa rail construction June 9-Sep 8, with bus replacements to Domodossola. Also, Domodossola to Iselle will be closed for maintenance from 9-30 August 2024 (not an issue in Sep). Can we purchase the International ticket online from SBB, the downline carrier? Rather than TrenItalia, the boarding rail carrier in Domodossola? Will there be an electronic ticket issued by SBB on international ticket as a.pdf with QR code to show onboard in Dom? The reason we ask, we had problems last year, buying from OBB, the downline rail company, rather than TrenItalia the departure country in eastern Italy, and the ticket was not issued electronically outside of country (to show on phone or print.) Thanks in advance.

I suggest to buy buy the ticket from Stresa to Domodossola at the vending machine at the station and validate it before boarding the bus (validator machines are available). A ticket office could also be open. You will avoid the check-in in Italy. If you want a ticket in advance, buy it and make the check-in before boarding the bus with the Trenitalia Mobile app.

From Domodossola to Switzerland, it is not an international ticket, Domodossola is included in the Swiss pricing. You can buy it on sbb.ch or in the SBB Mobile app. You can also find the timetables.

When is this trip? And are you going to Brig? You do not need a ticket for each train separateluy. Just book Stresa - <destination in Switzerland> with SBB, and you will receive the necessary tickets.

Krist Buying a direct ticket from Stresa to a destination in Switzerland is another alternative, but it doesn’t work when replacement buses are in service between Domodossola and Iselle.

For Italy, you don’t obtain a ticket, only a link to make the check-in.

Hello and thank you for your kind response. We would board in Domodossola to Swiss destinations beyond Brig. Ticketing on a through fare. Apologies if I was unclear…My question is two-fold, is this leg operating, Dom to Brig prior to Sep 9, and if so is there any restriction if riding Regional vs. EC trains? And the second part, is a ticketing question, can ticket be issued using downline country’s rail system ticket (SBB), boarding in Italy. Or must it be through TrenItalia. Hope that helps. (I’m not particularly asking about Stresa nor planning to take the replacement bus.) We had major issues buying an international ticket from the downline rail carrier’s online system and did not receive an automated, electronic ticket, due to a requirement to buy in-country….confusing and costly to buy new ticket in Italy. SBB is SO, SO, reliable and wonderful! Thanks!

CharlieSue456 Tickets from Domodossola to Switzerland are Swiss tickets with Swiss pricing, Trenitalia is not involved at all. You have also Swiss staff on the trains.

If you buy a Supersaver ticket, you must take only the trains indicated on the ticket.

If you a buy a point-to-point ticket or a Saver Day Pass, you can use every train including EC.

It is better to open an account and not to buy the ticket as guest on sbb.ch. You can also find your ticket in the SBB mobile app if you are logged in with the same account.

Danhiel Thank you Danhiel! This is very helpful. There is so much online, on every travel site, about the Milan-Domodossola route closure, but I think most of it does not have anything to do with the operating route north from Dom into Brig! (it has made us question a stopover in Stresa, entering and leaving, but it was a great town last time we were there) I do have a SBB account, and love them. Everything is so well laid out and user friendly on their website and app not to mention their reliability. Again, thank you for your time and information! I’m trying to learn, and not make the same mistakes - plus – irregular ops, are just that, irregular and require a little additional understanding and flexibility! Thank you.

The last time I visited Stresa it was raining, I hope the weather will be better for you.
