Hello,

What is the difference between Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera Day Pass and simple Arcobaleno Day Pass? I want to travel from Milan to Lugano and maybe visit also Locarno and I’m looking for the cheapest way to do it, incl. the option to buy a “i travel in Lombardy” card.

“Transfrontaliere” means “cross border”. These are tickets and passes where an Italian route has been added to the ticket. Eg. if you buy a return ticket Milano - Lugano you actually get a “Transfrontaliere Arcobalen Day Pass” which is valid on all trains on the route from Milano till Chiasso, for a whole day, and on all public transport in the 100,110,140 and 150 zones of the Ticino Arcobelan Tariff system.

In Italy, the Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera Day Pass is not a day pass offering travel at will. It is a single and return ticket on the selected direct route. You cannot use it to travel elsewhere than indicated as departure/arrival station, and the journey cannot be done multiple times. The ticket is not valid on any train yet on regional trains (RE and R) only.

In Ticino, however, the Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera Day Pass allows you to travel within the indicated zones at will (as many journeys you want), with any public transport service (train, bus, etc.), and no matter the train category.
All trips have to happen within the time of validity as indicated on the ticket.

I appreciate the answers shared here as my husband and I just booked the Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera Day Pass from Milan to Lugano (& back). I do have one question though. Compared to the Italian trains we have booked, it did not give us an option to reserve seats for our 2nd class tickets. Do we need to reserve seats? If not, how do we know which car to sit in when we arrive at the platform listed? Thank you in advance for your reply.

Please note that this ticket is valid only in regional trains in Italy (RE 80 from/to Lugano) and it is not possible to reserve seats. You can choose any free seat. This ticket is not valid in the Eurocity.

You can basically sit anywhere you want in second class. Second class you recognised by its logo, which is a number 2. First class is a number 1.

Not that this Day Pass is exactly the same price wether you buy it in advance, or just minutes before travel. So there was no need to buy it now when travel is in a month. Furthermore if you had bought it at the station in Milano you would have received a ticket that works in the turnstiles at that station. You will have to use one of the manned platform entrances in stead now.

Are you sure that it is possible to buy Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera Day Passes at the Milano Centrale station? At the ticket office or on vending machines?

It is not necessary to buy such tickets in advance, but they are refundable until the day before departure.

Thank you both. I have already purchased the pass, so I will check-in with the train station attendant when I am ready to depart Milan. I appreciate knowing to look for the 2 for second class cars.

In Milano Centrale there are now automatic gates between the main concourse and the platform area, and the ticket you bought from SBB is not yet able to open these. But some gates are manned, and those are the ones you need to go through.
