Zurich City-Ticket - what does it cover?

I will be flying into Zurich and spending time in the city before onward travel on the train to Chur. When I select the ticket to purchase I also get offered a city-ticket for Zurich. Does this ticket include travel from the airport to Zurich HB (zone 121) and also onward to the Lindt factory (zone 150) or is it just for zone 110? It isn’t clear to me if it covers all zones on the network map at zvv.ch

Beware, if looking up a ZRH Airport - Chur ticket and selecting the “Kloten” city upgrade, that would only cover the local zone 121 (Kloten area = airport location), NOT 110, therefore not of any value for you.

So if you want to visit Lindt on the way, probably the best idea is to get separate tickets for Airport - Rüschlikon (4 zones, 110 counts as double, single journey ticket validity = 2h) and a separate one for Rüschlikon - Chur (point-to-point ticket, valid all day). If you want to spend more than 1h in Zurich City, you might also need to split the airport-city and city-Rüschlikon tickets (3 zones each, validity = 1h!).
Note that the S8 based connections leaving Rüschlikon are going back to Zurich and therefore more expensive than the southbound S24 connections.

Alternatively you could also buy a zone 110+150 (3 zones) day pass in addition to the Airport-Chur ticket, but that’s probably the most expensive option.

I purchased a standard ticket from Zurich to Chur and selected the city ticket for Zurich.

It is described on the phone App as

in the small print - incl Day Pass for local traffic in Zürich (Zone 110 ZW fare network)

If I want to travel from the airport (zone 121) into zone 110 and then from zone 110 to the chocolate factory in zone 150 can I just buy a zone extension for the duration of the period travelling in the other zones? from here? https://ticketshop.zvv.ch/

As I have the zone 110 (double) covered with the City Ticket from SBB will a zone 1-2 extension take care of it?

I can‘t answer whether e.g. a 24h 1-2 zone extension ticket would cover the airport - city, city-Rüschlikon and Rüschlikon-Thalwil legs. The key question here is whether your p2p city-ticket upgrade is considered as a „real“ ZVV zone 110 fare network ticket or not, so it can be „extended“ according to the ZVV tariff regulations. Because the latter are just stating that „fare network tickets“ can be extended…

Maybe someone else here knows? @RolandP maybe?
ZVV customer service might also know, but recently they failed to correctly explain something to me which was actually clearly stated in the regulations, as I found out later…

Another option is to cancel your existing ticket (100% refund as long as the validity period hasn‘t started yet) and to re-purchase:

zone ticket(s) covering airport - city - Rüschlikon - Thalwil (mind the 1 or 2h validity period of single journey tickets)
a Thalwil - Chur point-to-point ticket

With a Point-to-Point Travelcard.
Buy a normal ticket for the missing route.

With a Regional Travelcard (e.g. ZVV, Libero, TNW, Passepartout, etc.).
Buy a zone upgrade for the missing number of zones within a fare network._

Which suggest to me that I cannot buy a zone extension but have to buy a route ticket when travelling outside of zone 110

or… as you say… get a refund, buy a P2P for the city train to Chur and just buy the ZVV routes I will need or a Zurich Card for 29CHF and not have to worry about what transport I use?

I posted on the ZVV Facebook messenger explaining the ticket I have and this is the reply.

Hello Michael, we are delighted that you will be visiting our beautiful Zurich. In your case, the best way to travel is to buy a ZVV connecting ticket valid for 1 - 2 zones in addition to your ticket for zone 110. We wish you lots of fun at the Lindt Museum. You are sure to enjoy it.

That SBB link mentions travelcards only, no normal tickets, but seems to confirm my concerns with anything „point-to-point“.

But with that latest response from ZVV in your hands, I’d simply go ahead and get such a „return“ 1-2 zone extension ticket (so it will be 24h valid, not just 1h). In the (rather unlikely) event of a ticket control and a ticket inspector should raise his eyebrows, you’ll simply show him that „official“ response, demonstrating that you took care, enquired and just did as instructed.
