What makes me strange is that I went with other friends and they paid a total of 88 € divided four people for a ticket valid all day. I suggest to buy a Half Fare Travelcard: https://www.sbb.ch/en/tickets-offers/travelcards/half-fare-travelcard.html You can visit the ticket office of the SBB in Konstanz station to buy it. What was your plan for that day? If all you wanted was go to Wasserauen and back, with a stop in St. Gallen then you should just have purchased a return Konstanz - Wasserauen on the SBB app. You do not need to buy tickets for each train individually.
And if you had don that the SBB app would have offered you an OstWind Day pass, which would have given you unlimited travel in the whole OstWind tariff area, on all public transit. With the Half Fare Card this would have been 20,- if you left after 9. That is probably what your friends had.

So I guess you still need to get a bit more familiar with how public transit works here.

With this Half Fare Travelcard, you must pay the half price of the tickets. If you travel every day in Switzerland, other travelcards are available.

A “change of class” ticket is just an upgrade. You need to be in possession of a 2nd class ticket for that.
An one way OSTWIND ticket has a validity of a couple of hours, depending on the distance. But a return ticket is in fact a day pass, and in your case that would have been your best option. Select “return” in the app, and you would automatically be offered a day ticket, and that would have been right for you.

If you don’t travel every day in Switzerland, but only for leisure trips, a Half Fare Travelcard is suffisant.

mb99 You must buy a ticket with this possibility for every trip, search a timetable on sbb.ch or in the SBB Mobile app and the system displays by default the half fare prices. You must indicate that you have this discount when you define the passenger.

I forgot something. If you want to buy this Half Fare Travelcard, you could also ask at the ticket office for the refunds of your tickets (but, as indicated earlier, a refund is only possible before the day of validity).

A return ticket 2nd class Konstanz - Bern on the same day costs 77 CHF with the Half Fare Travelcard.

You can also buy day passes that cost never more as 78 CHF. If you buy the ticket in advance, you may have cheaper Saver Day Passes, but they are not exchangeable and not refundable. In this example only 69 CHF for tomorrow.
