Saver Day Pass + Swiss Family Card

Hello!

We’re a family of 3 with a 6 year old kid.
We’re going to travel to Switzerland on February 2025 and doing some research I found out that I can buy a Saver Day Pass in advance (today) and get the Swiss Family Card (for my kid to travel for free) when we get to Zurich, on the same day we will be using the Saver Day Pass, is this correct?

Another question is, does this combination (Saver Day Pass + Swiss Family Card) will be enough to take the route Zurich - Luzern - Interlaken at any time and then return via the Interlaken - Bern - Zurich route at any time as well?

I just want to make sure I’m buying the right tickets and that it is ok to get the Swiss Family Card at the moment of travel.

You are mistaken.

The Swiss Family Card is only available and given for free provided you as parents have purchased the Swiss Half Fard.

Without the Swiss Family Card you cannot make use of the Swiss Family Card. Instead, you would have to purchase the Junior Card for CHF 30 per child, available at the SBB Travel Center only, not online. It has the same area of validity as the Swiss Half Fare Card.

However, I wondered what your plans will be for Interlaken? It is a travel hub, not a destination. If you want to explore the Jungfrau area, where Interlaken is not part of it, you should consider the purchase of the Swiss Half Fare Card or any travel pass such as the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass.

According to the information provided:

“Children under 16 years of age accompanied by at least one parent (holding a Swiss Travel System ticket) travel free of charge with the complimentary Swiss Family Card”

To my understanding, if I purchase the Day Saver Pass, my kid would have right to the Swiss Family Card. If this is not the case, can the three of us travel back and forth from Zurich to Interlaken via the route of our choosing and at anytime using the “Day Saver Pass”?

We want to go to Interlaken mainly because of the scenic route, this route was recommended by a friend because my wife dreams to go in the train and observe the mountains and the lakes.

Maybe there’s a better route?

That’s why we are interested in the Day Saver Pass, we thought we could go from Zurich to Interlaken passing through Luzern, experience the scenic route and then come back to Zurich passing through Bern which is faster and if we have time, spend a couple of hours in Bern. All this in our own schedule since I think we can take any trains in any directions at anytime using the Day Saver Pass.

Is this correct? If not, could you be so kind to explain what’s the best way to take this route?

A Saver Day Pass is primarily a resident ticket, which can also be purchased by tourists but the Swiss Family Card cannot be used with it.

The round trip is certainly possible, even though it means a few hours of train travel.

Keep in mind that February is winter time here,

day light lasts from 8 AM to 5 PM.
no green pastures, no turquoise blue lakes, no waterfalls, yet winter landscape.

Do you plan other trips than this one while staying in Switzerland?

The issue is that we already have our trip booked (plane and hotel) we will just have to make the most out of it and come back in the summer 🙂.

We planned to take the scenic route on Saturday and Zurich on Sunday. But now that you mentioned that winter isn’t ideal for the scenic route, we may change our Saturday’s plan.

Maybe take the route Zurich-Luzern-Interlaken first thing in the morning to be able to return earlier than we planned to Bern and spend a few hours there before returning to Zurich.

If I understand correctly our options are:

Grab the Day Saver Pass for the 3 of us and use it to go from Zurich to Interlaken and return to Zurich via Bern.

Grab the Day Saver Pass for me and my wife and the Junior Card or Children’s Co-Travelcard Card for my kid to do the same routes.

Does the Junior Card works for trips from and to the airport and for normal transportation in the city such as buses and subways?

Which of the 2 children’s card should I buy for a weekend?

Sorry for the late reply, and thanks for your reminder. Being very active on this platform, I do get a lot of notifications and I simply missed yours among all the messages.

Starting the trip to Interlaken in the morning sounds to be a good plan; Bern is also nice in the late afternoon / evenings, with all the lights. Just keep in mind that it is going to be a long day (for your kids).

What concerns the child ticket:
If it is for two days only, you could also purchase two Children Day Passes, it costs CHF 19 for one day and covers the same routes as the Saver Day Pass. For two days, it comes to a total of CHF 38, while the Junior Card is CHF 30 for the entire stay. It is up to you what you want to purchase. The Children Co-Travel Card is not for you, this is for other co-travellers but parents.

I guess we will purchase 2 Day Saver Passes and a Junior Card since we are planing to use public transportation on Sunday as well and that way we will have the option to choose either Saturday or Sunday for the scenic route.
