Zurich Airport to Wengen - Return

Hi all
Apologies, I know many variations of this question have been asked but I am still not sure of the answer.

We are visiting Wengen in December for a few days and only plan to use the trains to get to and from the airport and then we will buy ski passes.

Travelling with 1 other adults and two teenagers aged 16 + 18.

Trip cost each way per person is 42 (half price) but with the cost of the half prices pass (international traveller) I dont think I actually save any money buying it. Am I understanding this correctly do you think?

Two one way tickets without half fare card cost CHF 184, no advantage to buy a card for CHF 120.

I suggest to buy One Country Interrail Passes for Switzerland (or Eurail Passes if you live outside Europe). You have 3 days, it were also possible to make an excursion if the weather is too bad to sky (but note that not all companies accept such passes).

Your teenagers have a discount and will pay € 144, for the adults the price is € 165.

Buy saver day passes or superaver tickets on www.sbb.ch as soon as you have booked your plane tickets. For your arrival day get a saver day pass. For your departure day either a saver day pass, or a supersaver ticket. Whatever is cheaper…

Krist and do you not need the half price ticket to buy the saver day pass? they are 61CHF

You do not need the half fare card. But with HFC the Saver Day Pass is further discounted.

Try it this way: In the top menu of the SBB website select Search > Saver Day Pass, then click the red “Purchase online” button

thanks - i had understood that i still needed the HFC to use the saver day pass - but I dont! thats great - will buy now as they are still available for both travel days.

Saver Day Passes are almost always available until the day before the travel date, just their prices will keep increasing the closer that date is getting.

You’d usually not need a HFC just for ZRH - Wengen return. However if planning a trip up to Jungfraujoch (which is not THAT uncommon for Wengen visitors), it quickly might start paying off. Especially if also planning additional excursions in the vicinity.

Saver Day passes are a great option when arriving in Switzerland by air, as they are fully flexible. So once you are off the plane just walk to the train, get on, and be on your way. And indeed I always buy them as soon as I have bought my plane tickets.

Suggestion for SBB: Make a deal with the airlines where they can just sell a discounted day pass together with a train ticket. Far easier to implement than the current air-rail to limited destinations system.
