Zurich to Freiburg (Breisgau) possible with Swiss Travel Pass?

I want to take a direct ICE train from Zürich HB to Freiburg(Breisgau) Hbf in December. I have a Swiss Travel Pass. If I’m not mistaken, the pass will get me to Basel and then I need to have another purchased ticket from Basel to Freiburg from Deutsche Bahn? Do I understand that correctly? If yes, can I reserve a seat for the whole journey from SBB and remain on the train from Zurich to Freiburg even though I’ll essentially have two different tickets covering each half of the trip?

You are talking about the Swiss Travel Pass.

It is valid as far as Basel Badischer Bahnhof, short Basel Bad.
From there you will need a ticket which you can purchase from SBB or Deutsche Bahn (DB). And yes, it is possible to combine the two tickets.
