Milan to Zermatt

Hello, I need your help, please. My family of six will be taking a train from Milan Centrale to Zermatt on 12 December 2024. We expect to arrive at Milan Centrale around 10 AM from the airport. Could you advise us on the best route and whether we should buy a rail pass or point-to-point tickets? I’m feeling a bit stressed about this. Thank you!

If you are coming from Malpensa Airport you should not go in to Milan. The airport is to the North of Milan, half way to Switzerland. Going in to Milan and then out again is going to add a lot to your travel time.
In stead take the bus to Domodossola:

Or you can go by train all the way via Gallarate.

Buy ticket online on www.sbb.ch, or at the station. The routes I described above do not require advanced purchase of tickets. Except for the bus Malpensa - Domodossola.
See www.sbb.ch for schedules from Malpensa or Domodossola. I would lean towards taking the bus to Domodossola and trains from there onwards.

Option 1 is to take the train from Malpensa Aeroporto T1 to Domodossola (l), and then from Domodossola (l) to Zermatt.

Option 2 involves taking a bus from Malpensa T1 to Domodossola, followed by a train from Domodossola (l) to Zermatt.

I’m a bit confused about the “via Gallarate” part. Could you please clarify? Sorry for the trouble!

NSJ if you look up trains times from Malpensa to Zermatt on www.sbb.ch you will see that the route has you usually change trains at Gallarate. That is the “via Gallarate” part. Look at a map and you will understand.
Basically there is a train service from Malpensa to Lugano (in Switzerland). This train crosses the main Milan - Brig railway in Gallarate. So you change there.

However, easiest is probably the bus to Domodossola, and train from there.

Thank you for your suggestion. However, since I am traveling with luggage and two senior parents, along with two adults and two children, I would prefer to take the train from Malpensa Airport for easier transfer. I would greatly appreciate your help in planning my route from Malpensa to Zermatt. I apologize for any repeated questions.

Please note that you have to change at Gallarate,

Probably it would be easier to travel with a Taxi from Malpensa Airport to Domodossola.

From Domodossola to Zermatt by train, change at Brig or Visp for Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.

Thank you. By the way, can I use the saver day pass for ticket usage from Zermatt to Milan?

The Saver Day Pass is valid till Domodossola (where the Swiss and the Italian networks meet). So you would need to add a ticket Domodossola - Milano. If you buy one for the EC train you can just stay on the train all the way.

Do check if that is indeed going to save you money though…

Do you happen to know any reliable taxi or service companies that can take us from Milan airport to Domodossola? We’re considering this option instead of the bus. The train tickets from Domodossola to Zermatt, should I buy them now, or can I purchase them on the day of travel?

By the way, if I purchase train tickets from Zermatt to Milano via the SBB app, the segment from Brig to Milano is valid, right, since it’s an Italian train? Is there anything else I need to do after purchasing, just to be sure?

Lastly, for the train tickets from Zermatt to Milano, should I buy them now, or can I purchase them on the day of travel?
