Differences Trenitalia and SBB

I’m planning to travel from Milan, Italy, to Geneva, Switzerland, and I’ve come across some information suggesting that I must book my ticket through the app of the departure country (Italy, in this case), rather than the app of the arrival country (Switzerland).

Does this mean I need to purchase my ticket through Trenitalia, or is it possible to buy it through the SBB app instead? What are the differences between the two booking platforms?

You are free to book the ticket wherever you want. You will be on the same train regardless. You can buy that ticket with Trenitalia, SBB, DB, ÖBB, Trainline, Eurail etc… Any place that sells international tickets.

However I also always suggest people to buy the ticket from the railway where the trip starts. Because if there is an issue you can just go to a ticket office. And SBB does not have ticket offices in Milan, but Trenitalia does…
