If you bought a ticket with half fare reduction you will need to be in posession of the half fare card to be permitted to travel on it.
So either get the half fare card (which may, or may not, be worth it in your case) or buy another half fare ticket for the same route. The two together then function as a normal price ticket.
Note that standard point-to-point tickets do not need to be bought in advance.
