First Class quality and merits

Today, travelling on the 0702 IC from Zurich to Lausanne via Bern. The train to Bern in First Class not only is almost completely full but has carriages from the 1980s (red and brown Polster) some of which are lacking basics such as a plug to charge, with basically no legroom for the 2-seaters or don’t even provide equal comfort as the 2nd class standard carriages of today’s Duplo (double decker) generation. At the end of the day, I’m paying my day pass 78.- + an extra addon of 50.- for what? I seriously struggle to see the value-added of the First Class if it’s to end up in such a shabby wagon. What’s the limit where one can say, I’ve had enough of this ripoff, please refund me for the extra nonexistent premium service and quality that I had originally paid for? It’s worth reconsidering one’s options at this stage.

You obviously had a EW IV consist. I really like those cars, as the seats are very comfy in 1st class. Older EW IV cars have been retrofitted with power sockets but they are often not immediately obvious, as they are higher up, between the windows.

As to the price: Without a Half Fare Card train travel is indeed expensive. It is a kind of tax on people who do not use public transit a lot…
