Because that there are no tickets available is nonsense. When I go to www.scnf-connect.fr and look up that TGV from Mulhouse to Luxembourg I still see tickets in 1st class for 50 euro, indicating that this trains is far from booked out. And TER and domestic Swiss trains never sell out. This is just a booking system failure.

The SNCF cannot sell tickets from Basel SBB to Luxembourg, only from Saint-Louis or Mulhouse to Luxembourg. The only possibility is to buy the tickets in two transactions:

— Interlaken Ost - Mulhouse
— Mulhouse - Luxembourg

I didn’t find any other reseller who can automatically cut the trip in Mulhouse, I tried with Trainline, Raileurope, DB, CFL.

In the end I booked with DB. I am going up on Sunday via Germany (because it turns out the Metz - Luxembourg is a substitute bus). I am not in a hurry, and I imaging the Mannheim - Trier - Luxemboug will offer some scenery.

On the way back I book with DB as well, but I am going Luxembourg - Mulhouse - Basel - Interlaken, and DB managed to find the best tickets for me. TGV Inoui for Luxembourg - Mulhouse, TER Fluo for Mulhouse Basel, and a SBB supersaver ticket for Basel - Interlaken.

I must say, that the internation sales site for DB is getting ever better. It managed to book a trip in France for me that SNCF itself can’t…
