Bernina Express

My wife and I want to travel on the Bernina Express Departing 8:06 to Chur, from where we will on travel to Munich. The 8:06 is our best departure for our onward journey. We’re considering both the panoramic carriages as well as standard carriages. We know the standard carriages are not able to be reserved so I have a couple of questions:

Can we rely on the 8:06 to have standard carriages and how many seats are likely to be available.
If they do have standard seats how like;y is it that there will me many passengers wanting to use those seats (perhaps because they could not get the panoramic carriages.

There will be standard carriages. The train cannot move without them. However there is no way to guarantee that there will be enough free seats that everyone can sit. However I expect that there will be a seat for you.

Note that if you are continuing to Munich the same day that you should buy a ticket Tirano - Munich on www.bahn.de. That will be cheapest. And with that ticket you can, if you want, still get a separate reservation for the panoramic coaches.

(And that is why ticket and reservation are separate…)

Thanks, that’s really helpful. It is cheaper than with the half fare card, I’ll put it in my spreadsheet to work out the best passes to get. I forgot to mention that our expected travel date is 22 June 2025.

An allied question if I may.

We’re travelling the Bernina Express on 22 June, the day before we’re travelling Luzern to Tirano on the Gottard line and bus. We were thinking of travelling light and sending our suitcases on 20 June to either Chur or St.Margrethen. These should arrive by 9am on the 22nd. So a couple of questions.

How reliable is the service (I’m assuming good) as we would have problems if they weren’t there when we arrived.
Which station would be best, St. Margrethen would be ideal, and would an hour between trains be sufficient to collect the bags.
