No, the majority of the Swiss are in posession of a Half Fare Card. Imagine the queues in front of the ticket windows if everyone had to go to the station to buy ½ tickets.
Half Fare (½) has to be chosen while choosing a ticket, such as the seating class and journey option, too.

The ticketing system does not care whether you are entitled to buy half fare tickets; this is solely checked by the conductor or ticket inspector in the train.
