Hello, If the trip from Como san Giovanni stn Italy shows up on the sbb app can I take any train even if it originates in Italy or do I need to buy a ticket from Como to somewhere in Italy ie, Lugano then the SBB day saver pass is valid? or am I ok if any ITALY TO SWITZERLAND route shows up on the SBB app if I have a day saver pass? Thanks

Yes, you need a ticket from Como S.G. to Chiasso, from where your SDP will be valid.

The SBB app shows most trains in Europe. The mere fact that a train is shown does not indicate that SBB operates the train, or that the Swiss Tariff is valid.

The RE80 is a TILO train, a joint-venture of the two railway operators SBB and Trenord.

In Switzerland, the train operator is irrelevant. Here, we have trains from different countries (ICE from Germany, Railjet from Austria, TGV from France, Astoro from Italy, etc).

As soon as they join the Swiss rail road network (in your case at Chiasso) Swiss train tickets are even valid on those. This is the truth of the great success of our public transit system: one ticket fits all.

You will need a ticket from Como to Chiasso, and from there on you can travel on your Saver Day Pass.

Thank you but the train is an Italian train from Chiasso to Lugano. Not an SBB train. Is the day pass still valid on an Italian train ? There are other trains that are Swiss from Chiasso to Lugano but the one that we want to take is an Italian train. Hoping it’s covered by the day pass ?

The RE80 is operated by TILO, an SBB/TRENORD joint venture.

But what you also need to understand is that the Saver Day Pass is not an SBB pass. It is an “all public transit in Switzerland” pass. You can take all public transit at will, and can ignore whose colors a train is carrying. The pass is valid the moment you are in Switzerland. And that happens at Chiasso.
