How to use Swiss Half Fare Card on the bus?

How do I use a Swiss Half Fare card on the bus to get a 50% discount on the fare? I assume we have to buy the ticket for the bus when we board it.

You have to purchase ½ fare tickets before you get on the bus. Many bus operators do not sell tickets on board their services.

Use the SBB Mobile app and activate the half fare option. See this advice:

On busses where you can buy the ticket from the driver you can just tell him you have the half fare card, and show it if they ask.

Note that if you are taking the bus as part of a longer trip you do not need a separate ticket. Just buy a ticket from origin to destination that covers your whole trip at the start. Then you can just board the bus, find a seat and enjoy the ride.
