I am using SBB for the first time and just very confused about the tickets I need to purchase. I want to take the bus 12 from Lugano Centro or Lugano Palazzo Studi to Monte Bre and back. As I understand the tickets are valid per zone so in the app, it shows me 5.2 CHF for a journey. So I need to purchase 2*5.2 CHF for my return right? It says the validity for 1 ticket is for an hour or something but is it just in that direction and does not include the return journey?
I am sorry if this is a repeated question or something super obvious, but I tried going through the FAQs and even talked to the representatives but it did not clear my confusion.

You can buy a return ticket, you will obtain an Arcobaleno day pass valid in every bus in the chosen zone(s) during the day of validity. It is not necessary to buy such tickets in advance. You have also vending machines at the stations (or perhaps in the buses) or you can buy them in the SBB Mobile app before you board the bus.

Note that this ticket is only for the bus, you will need another ticket for the funicular. It is not recommended to buy such tickets in advance, the weather could be bad.

Which connection are you looking up exactly?

The Monte Brè Funiculary is NOT included in the Arcobaleno regional fare network. Therefore when looking up connections to the Monte Brè summit using the funiculary, only then you’re getting a point-2-point (or Lugano City) ticket offered instead of an Arcobaleno zone ticket. The funiculary itself is 17.00 full fare (8.50 half fare) one way, 26.00/13.00 return.
So the 5.20 you mentioned in your post is just for an Arcobaleno Zone 10 (single journey) ticket, valid only for the buses until the Funiculary base station in Suvigliana.

So either get an Arcobaleno zone 10 return ticket (= day pass) for 10.40, if you’ll hike Monte Brè. Or then get the p2p/city ticket offered for the complete trip including the funiculary for 36.40.

This the response I received from SBB- As the validity period for city zones is generally 1 hour, we recommend checking whether your return journey falls within this timeframe.
If your return trip is within the 1.5-hour validity of the ticket, one ticket per person is sufficient for both the outbound and return journeys. However, if your return trip exceeds this validity period, an additional ticket will be required.
