Seat Reservation for EC trains with Swiss travel pass

Hello everyone,

Im planning to book a train from Zurich HB to Milano Centrale on 25 May. We are a family of five and plan to use Swiss Travel pass.

We plan to take the train of EC15 Direction Milano Centrale and need to buy the ticket from Chiasso to Milano Centrale separately under Swiss Travel Pass.

We already purchased Swiss Travel Pass but how can I reserve the seat for the EC train from Zurich to Milan for whole trip?

Yes, you can buy a ticket from Zurich to Milan and select « GA Travelcard » as discount, you will pay only for Italy, but the seat is reserved from Zurich.

I would and something. It could be cheaper to buy tickets only from Chiasso because family discounts may be available in Italy. In this case, it is not possible to reserve a seat from Zurich.

If I purchase the ticket from Chiasso to Milano Centrale by using SBB mobile app and select ‘GA Travelcard’ , the seat will be reserved from Zurich to Milano Centrale through the whole trip?

I didn’t see your second question. To reserve seats from Zurich you must buy tickets from Zurich.

The discounts for Italy are available only on Trenitalia App/website.

Haha maybe I ask the question not clearly.

I will use Swiss travel pass during the trip and will take EuroCity train from Zurich to Milan .However, I need to buy the train ticket from Chiasso to Milan separately due to the travel pass is not included.

If I purchase the train ticket from Chiasso to Milan online, I already can reserve the seat.

My question is how can I reserve the seat from Zurich to Chiasso with Swiss Travel Pass if I take the EuroCity Train?

My answers were probably not enough clear.

If you want reserved seats from Zurich to Milan:
Buy tickets Zurich - Milan in the SBB app or on sbb.ch.
Indicate that you have a « GA Travelcard » as discount.
It is not possible to reserve only seats without buying a ticket.

If you want discounted family tickets for Italy, but without reserved seats from Zurich:
Buy tickets Chiasso - Milan in the Trenitalia App or on trenitalia.com.

In the second case, note that your reserved seats from Chiasso to Milan could already be free from Zurich.

I tried purchase the ticket from SBB app and select from Zurich to Milan under ‘GA Travelcard’ will cost CHF105 and without select seat by myself. However, if I select from Chiasso to Milan in SBB app cost CHF95 only, is there any difference?

May I ask the above reply is that mean if I purchase the tickets from Chiasso to Milan on trenitalia.com and selected the seat, the same seat also already reserved from Zurich to Chiasso?

Yes, it costs 2 CHF more for every person if you reserve a seat from Zurich, it is not an error.

The seats may be reserved between Zurich and Chiasso but also be already occupied by people without reservation travelling only in Switzerland. Reservations are mandatory only in Italy in the Eurocity.

I would just do the following:

Book Chiasso - Milano on www.trenitalia.com
That way you can take advantage of cheaper Italian prices.
Board the train in Zurich. Be maybe 10 minutes early at the platform. If the seats you reserved between Chiasso and Milano are not taken by someone just occupy them. If not, just sit somewhere else.
Between Zurich and Chiasso reservations are not compulsory.
