You don’t need the card for buying discounted tickets at half fare, it is not checked during the purchase process. So everyone can do this, otherwise tickets for children could not be purchased (the half fare ticket is exactly the same for children and for adult HF card holders).
You willl need the card only for traveling with such discounted tickets, as proof that you’re allowed to do this as an adult.
