Wanting to travel from Milan to Zurich and make the most of it. I think the gothard panorama express with boar ride and a one night stay at lucerne is the way to go …??? Exactly how would I purchase tickets to ensure this happens? Is it as simple as taking the Gothard panorama express from Lugano Station to Luzern Bahnhofquai? I understand I have to get from Milan to Lugano but my concern is making sure I’m correctly purchasing tickets so that we experience train ride and boat ride that ends in lucerne? Thanks!

Could you indicate us the date of travel? It would be easier to help you. Depending of this date, you can buy Saver Day Passes cheaper than regular tickets.

From Milan to Lugano you have two options: regional trains or direct Eurocity trains. Regional trains are cheaper but less comfortable.

Saver Day Passes are still available for this day and you can choose them as ticket. They are valid from the border station of Chiasso and offer full flexibility in Switzerland, your can travel with every train, boat or bus on the day of validity, except for mountain excursions, for example they are not valid to Pilatus.

With a Saver Day Pass, you need also tickets from Milan to Chiasso. You can buy them on sbb.ch. If you choose an Eurocity train, please note that tickets are valid only in the selected train in Italy. In regional trains tickets are valid for 4 hours.

The ticket type as such (e.g. saver day pass vs. point-to-point ticket) has no influence on the travel experience at all.
Unless getting 1st instead of 2nd class tickets as with the Gotthard PE consisting of 1st class coaches only, of course.
