STP on Munich to Luzern

Question for the community, hoping somebody can help. I’m starting to decide for an upcoming trip the half travel card or the Swiss travel pass. If I have the STP and I’m traveling from Munich to Lucerne, how does that work? Do I buy a ticket from Munich to the border then use the STP for the rest of the trip?

Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

You are right, you must buy a ticket from Munich to St. Margrethen (the border station). I suggest to buy it on bahn.de or in the DB Navigator app. Seat reservations are also recommended on this line.

Don’t use these cards to buy a through ticket from Munich to Lucerne with a discount in Switzerland, they are not valid for international tickets.

Hi Danhiel, thank you for your reply to this question, I have a similar query with a trip from Locarno to Zermatt via Domodossola. I can see that the first border station between Locarno and Domodossola could be Ribellasca however which is the border station after the Simplon Tunnel, would that be Brig?

The Swiss Travel Pass is valid on the Centovalli line and from Domodossola to Brig. You can find an area of validity map here:

However, I recommend seat reservations. For same panoramic trains a small surcharge is also due. You can find more information here:

That’s great, thank you. I had checked the general validity and it said only valid in Switzerland so I didn’t think to also check the area of validity map but it is there on the map, I should have double checked. Thank you for the seat reservation link too, I had not come across this.
