Zermatt to Milan with Swiss Travel Pass

Hello everyone,

I have some questions about my upcoming trip from Zermatt to Milan:

I hold a Swiss Travel Pass. For the journey from Zermatt to Milan, do I only need to purchase a ticket for the Domodossola to Milan section? If so, will I be able to exit the gates in Milan without any issues, even if I don’t have a boarding record for the Swiss part?

My trip is on Sunday, September 21st. I’m not yet sure which train time I will take because if the weather is nice, I would like to stay longer in beautiful Zermatt. However, I must arrive in Milan that day because I have a flight from Milan on September 22nd. Would you recommend buying the ticket to Milan in advance? If I wait to buy the ticket on the day of travel, is there a chance that tickets will be sold out?

In theory, you could purchase the ticket on the day of travel. But since you must be in Milan in time, I would not take the risk and book it in advance. We do not have a crystal ball to know the train’s occupancy.

Also, allow enough time and plan enough buffer, the Italian railways and their trains are not always that reliable; what if a train breaks down? Be prepared for it.

Plus, check the timetable carefully; Italians tend to announce rail road closures due to maintenance at very short notice; if rail replacement busses are operating, the travel time increases significantly.

There are no exit gates and there is no such thing as a “boarding record”. This is not air travel.

Thank you both very much for your replies and useful advice.

RolandP – I had actually read the thread you linked before posting, but since I have a flight the next day, I wanted to be extra sure. Your tips about booking in advance, leaving enough buffer time, and watching for possible delays or maintenance in Italy are very helpful.

Krist – Thank you for clarifying about the gates and “boarding record”. I asked because I had read online that someone had problems arriving in Milan without such a record, which made me a bit anxious. Your explanation reassures me.
