It is incredible, sad, and disappointing at the same time. I received an e-mail from SBB today, stating that, after 10 days since I reported having forgotten my backpack on a train between Chiasso and Locarno, the company now considers the item permanently lost.
What saddens me is knowing that this episode happened in Switzerland, a country where, supposedly, people in general would have no need to keep an item that does not belong to them. I know some people will say that it is not the country’s fault, or that it could have been a tourist who took my bag, but I still believe that I would expect this to happen in many other places — but not in Switzerland.
A country where security is always strong, surveillance works well, and yet having no resolution is truly disappointing. I come from Brazil, where violence and robberies are unfortunately at very high levels, but I have already been through similar situations there where even large amounts of money were returned. And now, a bag with just clothes, in Switzerland, has not been found.
This is just a heartfelt outburst from someone who truly believed, at the beginning of this sad episode, that it would be quickly and simply resolved.
