We are travelling from Geneva to Chur to take the Bernina Express, can we stop in Zurich and hop off and take the later train to Chur?

It depends of the type of ticket. It is not possible with a Supersaver Ticket, but it is possible with a Point-to-point Ticket or a Saver Day Pass.

When you search the timetable Geneva to Chur via Zurich and check the prices, the system will offer you all available possibilities.

If you purchase the tickets in advance, the cheapest price is usually a Saver Day Pass. It is valid everywhere in Switzerland during the day of validity, also in trams and buses, except for most mountain excursions. Please note that it is not exchangeable and not refundable.

Point-to-point Tickets have always the same price and you can buy them just before departure. They are valid for one trip during the day of validity.

Supersaver Tickets (valid only on the selected trains) are not refundable, Supersaver Tickets FLEX (also valid only on the selected trains) are 50% refundable.

Note that if you are actually going to Tirano you need a ticket Geneve - Tirano, not Geneve - Chur. In Switzerland tickets are for a route, and you can always do the whole trip on one ticket. (That is also the reason reservations for the Bernina Express are separate).
But for such a long trip a Saver Day Pass will probably the best option. That covers the Bernina Railway too.

Geneva to Tirano in one day? I would never do that. Otherwise, you would be too tired to enjoy the most beautiful stretch of the journey from Chur to Tirano. The entire trip takes over 8 hours.

For the two-day trip, you will need two tickets.

We have tickets to the Bernina Express and we are taking it from Chur and plan to stay overnight in Chur. Just having issues purchasing tickets from Geneva to Chur. Won’t accept the same card I used to purchase the Bernina Express. What other trains operate from Geneva to Chur.

I you have problems with your credit card, try to buy the tickets in SBB Mobile app with Apple Pay or Google Pay. You can also read this discussion about 3-D Secure:

You can for example travel via Brig - Andermatt - Disentis/Mustér, the line of the Glacier Express, but you don’t need reservations in regional trains. Saver Day Passes are also valid.
