Hello - In Lugano, tracks 1 and 2 do not share a platform. You will need to take the underpass. - If trains wait or not is not generally predetermineable. In this specific case, the onbound train will probably wait for a few minutes but not longer. Just because a connection is in the online schedule does not mean it will wait, but you are for sure not the only one doing this interchange and the people in charge know this. - No, both national and international passenger rights allow you to travel on without buying any additional ticket. The only condition is that the interchange time must have been reasonable (If the online schedule output it, it for sure is reasonable!) You don't even need to have one single ticket, it can be multiples for different parts of the journey. In the case you do miss your train, ask at the station office because you might need new seat reservations for the italian trains.

This is not an issue, this change happens daily multiple times. The railway would not offer this change if it was not doable. But, track 1 and 2 are not on the same platform, as often in Switzerland.

In case you miss the train to Milan due to a late arrival of the train from Lucerne, you can simply use the next connection. Important is that you change quickly, that you are ready upon arrival in Lugano and proceed to platform 1 right away.

This connection is with a regional train in Italy, it means that the ticket cannot be used on an Eurocity with mandatory reservation, even in case of delay.

A new reservation is neither mandatory nor possible on the next regional train, but it is necessary to change the selected train with the link provided when you buy the ticket or in Trenitalia app after importing the ticket. This is not necessary for Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera tickets which are valid for 4 hours if you start your trip in Tessin.

However, I don’t know if these rules also apply with an international through-ticket if you miss a connection. It would be advisable to ask at the ticket office, as it is difficult to know if you really have a through-ticket or two separate contracts for Switzerland and Italy.
