If I have a 2nd class Swiss Travel Pass, and I’m traveling from Zurich to Bern,
and I choose to purchase a round-trip 1st class upgrade, on a Point-to-Point Upgrade,
(not a Day Upgrade)

my question is:
Do I need to specify a time for my return journey?

do I not need to specify a time, and can I take any train on the same route as my outbound journey on the same day?

It depends on what you mean by a round-trip class upgrade.
The regular point-to-point class upgrades which you can also buy as a ‘two way trip’ do not require you to specify the time you use it. You may use it on any connection of your choice.

There are also the cheaper Saver’s class upgrades, which are limited to the one connection you chose upon purchase. You can’t buy these as a two way ticket, you would need to purchase two of them seperately and pick a connection for each of them.

Round-trip is an American expression referring to ‘return trip’ (British and most other languages), see Wikipedia. So the return journey takes the same route again, not a different (longer, more scenic or expensive) one.
