Validity of ticket for multiple stops

I understand that a normal train ticket is valid on a set day and until 5am the next day. Say I want to travel from Geneva to Montreux, but stop and explore Lausanne for a couple of hours on the way (still within the hours of validity). May I purchase a single Geneva-Montreux ticket, or must I buy two separate tickets, Geneva-Lausanne and Lausanne-Montreux?

Within the validity period of a ticket, the journey can be carried out at will and interrupted without formality. So you can have a longer stay in Lausanne and then continue your journey.

As @AferditaH said, you can break your journey. You are, however, not allowed to back track.
