Why direct train asking a transit?

I bought a direct train ticket from Luzern to Milano (EC 151) departed today. However, the staff asked me to change a train at Lugano station. The final arrival time is also delayed…

Anyone can help me how to understand this situation? No refund from SBB in this regard?

This is due to the closed Gotthard Base Tunnel after an accident: Gotthard Base Tunnel to remain partially closed for months - SWI swissinfo.ch

As a consequence, all trains are rerouted and Italy bound trains do end in either Lugano or Chiasso. A change is required to continue to Italy.
In addition, today, the EC151 already ended in Basel SBB, arriving 15 minutes late from Germany. A replacement train (EC10151) was therefore running from Basel to Lugano.
