Hallo Roland,
Thanks for the helpful message. I am sorry to post twice with similar questions because I am eager to clarify different topics. Instead of asking questions about what I think I should be doing, I will summarize below my travel plans, and you, with your extensive knowledge of SBB, will be able to tell me the most effective way to travel at the best cost in Switzerland. We arrive by plane from the USA in Zurich and stay three nights. We will also stay three nights at Interlaken before heading to Italy.
We are four travelers: two adults, one youth, and one child who will be 11 years old during the travel dates.
We intend to travel with luggage and get first class for convenience. Further, I had read some comments from past travelers that they had trouble finding seats and carrying luggage upstairs, so I thought getting first class and reserving seats when traveling with four of us and luggage would be essential.
Zurich to Interlaken Ost (mid-June): We will ideally take the train leaving Zurich for Luzern at 12:10 and arrive in Interlaken Ost at 14:55. This route has a PE train, which we want to take.
Interlaken Ost - Grindelwald - Lauterbrunnen - Interlaken Ost: We plan to take the trains to visit the two towns and move to the next town once finished. Here you told me to go to the train station and buy a round trip for all of us for the day. We wanted to go to Jungfrau but saw tour providers suggest a journey of around 6 hours with a stop in either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, which is too long before taking a 5+ hour ride to Como. I’m unsure of your thoughts on how long it would take to do it ourselves. We believe it is best to stick with visiting Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald.
Interlaken Ost—Zurich—Lugano: (I need to go to Como, but I can’t select Como as the final destination on SBB.ch.) We plan to take the 9:00 a.m. train to Zurich and change trains to Lugano.
The total number of days we would be in Switzerland using a train is six days. I considered the Swiss Travel Pass, a six-day version, but I believe it is cheaper to buy the trips separately and choose Supersaver Day passes. It seems the combination of Swiss Half Fare Cards and Supersaver Day passes offers savings that are less than the fee for the Swiss Half Fare Cards at 120 CHF. Finally, I was concerned that we wouldn’t find seats when we got on the train because we didn’t have specific trains and seats on tickets versus Supersave Day passes for specific journeys only.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Jimmy
