Bicycle transportation as luggage

Hello, I would like to go from Zürich to München on the 3rd of September and I need to carry my bike with me.

The international train has the symbol with the crossed bicycle so I guess it’s not possible to bring a bike on that one. I was wondering if that applies to bicycles taken apart and carried in a specific bicycle bag as a luggage.

If yes, what are the maximum sizes for the bag?

I could not find an answer to my question among FAQs and transportation policy.

Bike reservations and bike transport on the EC Zurich-Munich-Zurich is no longer possible until further notice. The blocking of bike reservations is due to safety concerns and will remain in place until operational clarification. The timetable has already been adjusted. Folded bicycles can be taken along free of charge as hand luggage. Luggage racks and multi-purpose areas are available for this purpose. When stowing, there must be no danger to you or any other passengers. Therefore, we recommend that you pack your bike in a bag or carefully secure it between other pieces of luggage with the help of straps that you have brought with you, in order to avoid damage. Folded folding bikes with a wheel diameter of up to 16 inches can be stored on the train like luggage. Luggage racks and multi-purpose areas are available for this purpose, for example. Thanks a lot for your reply Laura! It clarifies a lot the situation.

Can you please define what you consider a “folded bicycle”? Does it need to be stored in a bag/box? Is there any size limit?

If you agree, I would prefer to keep the information public here into the community so that more people can access it right away instead of calling the customer service.

Folded folding bicycle with a wheel diameter of up to 16 inches can be stowed on the train like luggage.
For bigger bikes with the front wheel removed, use a special transport bag such as the TranZBag. You can obtain this from the SBB Shop or from specialist dealers. Any bag, regardless of manufacturer, will be accepted.
