Questions about saver day pass and Junior travelcard

I was hoping someone can help me on here with the below:

I was checking for the following itinerary on the SBB website crossing the Swiss/Italian borders. I’m planning to buy a saver day pass for that day. Would the Luzern – Chiasso leg be 100% covered by the pass and I will just need to pay for 2.00 CHF for the Chiasso – Como S. Giovanni leg? I was trying to play around with the discount card options to see the updated fare but it’s not giving me the saver day pass option (it only has the GA and Half Fare travelcards for adults). I’m assuming the first leg is 100% covered, but just wanted to make sure. Once I buy the saver day pass, which option should I pick for the discount card in order for me to purchase the tickets and pay for the 2.00 CHF for this trip?

Also, we’re travelling with my two kids and will be buying Junior travelcards for them for 30 CHF each. I read online we’ll need to go to a staffed station to purchase these as they need to see passports and get photos for the kids as well. A few questions here: Can the photos can be in digital format stored in our cell phone? And they will be getting a paper card good for 30 days, correct? We can still purchase the tickets for them for the below itinerary even though they won’t get their cards till we arrive in Switzerland in June, correct?

Apologies for the lengthy questions. I really appreciate anyone’s input on this!

Using the Saver Day Pass, you have to split the tickets. The Saver Day Pass is valid as far as Chiasso. From Chiasso you need another ticket, Chiasso to Como S.G., plus seat reservations.

➝ You are not allowed to declare the Saver Day Pass as reduction to purchase a through ticket Zurich HB to Como S.G.

If you purchase an Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera ticket, this is only valid on the RE80, not on the EC trains.

Yes, you can purchase the Junior Card at the station. For tourists, it will be a paper ticket without a photo. You must instead carry your physical passports when using the Junior Card. It is not valid to Italy. You will also need a ticket for the children from Chiasso.

RolandP Thanks for your reply! Referring to the journey details I posted above again, it’s an EC train from Luzern to Lugano then from Lugano to Como S.G. it’s a RE80 train. Are you saying I don’t need to purchase a ticket from Luzern up to Chiasso and just show my saver pass on the SBB APP to the conductor. I just need to purchase a separate Arcobaleno Transfrontaliera ticket from Chiasso to Como S.G.on the SBB site for 1.6 CHF like the one shown below? Is seat reservation required on either of the trains? Thanks again!

Yes, you can puchase a ticket from Chiasso to Como S.G. yet still change trains at Lugano. The Saver Day Pass continous to cover your journey to Chiasso, although you change trains at Lugano.

No, seat reservations for the Eurocity are not required but recommended. Since you travel from Lucerne (sorry, I wrongly wrote Zurich in my previous post), I suggest using IC21 direct from Lucerne to Lugano, then RE80 to Como. The IC21 has usually fewer passengers than the EC train. Optionally you could reserve seats on the IC21, it is recommended for weekends during the summer.

No seat reservations in the RE80 possible/required.
